Telegram test access key: No phone number or verification code required.

Telegram, the instant messaging tool, was previously developing Passkey login. Passkeys reduce login friction for users, eliminating the need to enter phone numbers and send verification codes, thus significantly reducing Telegram's verification code sending costs.

Passkey login has now been launched in Russia, likely because Russia has begun blocking Telegram's SMS verification channels. Providing a passkey ensures Russian users can successfully log in. After testing is complete, Telegram should gradually roll out passkey login to users in all global markets.

How to create a passkey in Telegram:

Version Support: Android 12.2.10 or iOS 12.2.3

Phone Number: Currently only Russian phone numbers are supported.

Enabling the Feature: First, log in to your account using the traditional method. Then, go to Settings, Privacy, and Passkeys. If you don't see the Passkey option, your account is not yet supported.

Specific Steps: Click Passkeys and then click Add Passkey to create a passkey. The passkey will be saved in the system's built-in password manager or a third-party password manager you have installed. After creation, you may need to perform biometric verification or PIN code verification later.

How to log in using a passkey in Telegram:

After creating a passkey, Telegram will automatically pop up an option to log in using the passkey upon subsequent logins. Simply complete the authentication to log in. If the login option does not pop up automatically, wait a few seconds, and Telegram will display an option to log in using the passkey under your phone number. Click this option.

Because the access key itself contains complete identity information, users do not need to enter their mobile phone number or send a verification code. Using the access key allows for quick login without a mobile phone number or verification code, making the entire process very convenient.

Does using the access key mean that a mobile phone number is not required?

No, users still need to provide a mobile phone number for verification when registering an account. It is not possible to register an account without a mobile phone number (except for +888 virtual numbers). In other words, users must successfully register an account with their mobile phone number before binding the access key.

Mobile phone number verification is also one of Telegram's methods for combating spam accounts, so even in the future, Telegram is unlikely to completely abandon the use of mobile phone numbers for initial account verification.
