Friendship & Criteria Of Friendship in Islam

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Friends a the greatest of Allah. Islam teaches us to be careful while having someone as friend. Islam teaches us  how to choose friends and criteria of what should be shared between friends.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "A person is known by friends he/she has".

Therefore we should be careful before having someone as friend and be sure that they have not befriended someone who may have negative impact on their life or they themselves are not in bad company. A person having friends of bad company has greater chances that he will be deviated towards wrong path. It is well known that person mix with someone with similar manner and are like minded.

Based on Islamic teachings if you had positive impact on a person he has good company and if you had negative impact on someone he had bad company and vice-versa.

Islam teaches us not to spread tales of sins among the believers and who does so will have painful punishment in wold and life hereafter.
[Surah An-Nur (The Light) (24:19)]

If someone commits sin it should be kept secret between sinner and his creator and person should repent as soon as possible. It should not be shared with anyone as this piece of information may lead to blackmailing for worldly benefits and lots of examples has already been seen, with passing of time two close friends become enemy and they become enslaved due to some information that were shared before.

“Close friends, that day (Day of Judgment) will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous (who guard against evil), (To whom Allah will say) “O my servants, no fear ”
[Surah Az-Zukhruf (The Gold Adornment) (43:67)]

According to this verse of Quran a believer (man or women)is not allowed to have friend (male or female) who teaches bad habits or promotes haram activities. A Muslim should have friendship with people who will bring him closer to Allah and help him in worshiping Allah by guarding him from what Allah has forbidden.

Those friends of a believing Muslim who promotes haram activities, on the Day of Judgment they will be enemy of a Muslim. They will be blaming each other for their friendship.

Allah knows best.
