We should keep checking our system for errors in regular interval of time it will help you to save our computer/laptop from crashing and it helps to save your files and hardware from loss. It is advisable to perform this process at least once a month to keep documents and files secure and keep your PC running smoothly. This post will help to check hard disk or USB device for errors manually using command prompt. It is very rarely used by most of users, reason behind it might be because its free and inbuilt in windows by Microsoft.

Follow these instructions:

Check for errors:
  • Go to start and open run or directly press Windows Key + R key from desktop to open run.
  • Type cmd and hit enter key.
  • It will open command prompt.
  • Type chkdsk (It will run chkdsk.exe) and gives you result of errors after checking.
Fix Errors:
  • If you have got any error report then type chkdsk/f  instead of chkdsk and repeat above process, which will check for error and try to fix it.
  • Sometime it will ask that your computer will be checked after it restarts then type yes and press enter button, this will check and fix the errors when your computer will start next time.

Note:
  • It will check errors only in your hard disk in which you operating system is installed (In most cases drive C:/).
  • If you want to check error for other hard disks then, type type drive letter Ex. Type "D:" without quote for "local disk D:\" and follow "Check for errors" process above instructions simultaneously.
  • You need to login by Administrator or user having administrator rights to perform this operation.
  • Time for completion of operation depends on disk size, files on disk, computer performance, memory and processor.
  • You can also use "chkdsk D:" for scanning  "D:\" drive for errors i.e "chkdsk [Drive Letter]:"
  • Checking of errors should be done regularly to keep you PC and data secure. Sudden crash may cause lose of data and important documents.
